Mobility or Flexibility? Understanding What Your Body Really Needs

Mobility and flexibility are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same — and understanding the difference can significantly impact your movement and injury risk.

What Is Flexibility?

Flexibility refers to how far a muscle can stretch. It’s influenced by muscle length, tissue elasticity, and nervous system tolerance. Stretching improves flexibility, but flexibility alone doesn’t guarantee good movement control.

What Is Mobility?

Mobility is the ability to move a joint through its full range of motion with strength and control. It combines flexibility, muscle strength, coordination, and joint stability. Good mobility allows you to move efficiently and safely during everyday activities.

Why Mobility Matters More With Age

As we age, joints naturally stiffen and muscle strength declines. Focusing only on stretching without strength can increase instability. Mobility training supports balance, reduces injury risk, and improves confidence with movement.

The Physio Approach

Physiotherapy focuses on improving both flexibility and mobility — ensuring muscles are not only able to stretch but also able to support movement effectively.
